<image:caption>The owners of a 3,000 square foot 1960’s ranch style one-story house wanted a remodel that created a Green and Green brothers craftsman house that was true to the level of detail and authenticity that could be found in the famous houses from a century prior. Working with a revered San Diego architect who was an expert on Green and Green, the radical transformation included a two-story addition. Every window, door, and all the wood detailing for the stairs, lighting, and finishes were custom made over the course of a two-year construction period by a dedicated and extraordinarily talented general contractor. The results were stunning and visually arresting, including stained glass that was fabricated by the same company that created the windows for the original Green and Green houses in Pasadena.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2007 a major fire swept through San Diego County; 1,300 buildings were destroyed, including one on the property belonging to the client. The replacement house had to conform to the existing HOA suburban architectural style requirements, but behind that exterior skin is a very different house. The LEED Platinum structure features 10-foot first floor ceilings, 2 x 6 framed walls with an added layer of exterior insulation, R-50 insulation in the attic, heeled trusses, a cistern below the driveway, special eave vents that prevent sparks from entering the interior, two beefy steel moment frames, and all the wood used in the construction was specially processed to resist mold, fire, and termites. The resulting structure cost no more per square foot than others in the same neighborhood that were lost in the fire, but the difference is that the other houses were built exactly the same as the originals.</image:caption>

The Redwood Terrace Facility in the city of Escondido completely refurbished and modernized the interior spaces and private patios of the organization’s Adult Daycare Facility into a state of the art Memory Care Facility. While including the important security features, the owners and Lord Architecture concentrated on fulling the spaces with natural light, warm and friendly finishes, affectionate colors, and recreated patio landscape from a lackluster to joyful and environmentally respectful. We designed the old terrace into a healing garden for people to enjoy a quiet meal or provide a space where individuals or families can decompress from the stress of visiting someone in the hospital. An abundance of texture, exciting finishes, calming lighting, and a variety of seasonal plants with changing color created a place apart from the clinical environment in the hospital. <image:caption>The Parish of Corpus Christi expanded its facilities on a challenging site that is both long and narrow. Additionally, it is inconveniently bisected by a public easement. The goal of the Master Plan was to build a new two story Parish Center that would include a multi-use hall and parish administration office. The Parish Center has an elongated footprint to leave sufficient space on the site for all the required parking. In the future, the parish wishes to add an Elementary School and Athletic Field on the southeast side of the site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The administrative and customer services for San Diego's largest Catholic Cemetery were being run out of an obsolete 1930's caretakers house that had to be replaced. The new office building is considered more of a pastoral facility than a business operation. The clients are in the middle of a difficult time so the design intent for the project was to create a welcoming, light-filled, and ascendant space to provide calm for clients as well as the staff. Clients meet in small conference rooms with a counselor. There are no computers to be found, just a stress-less space and human interaction. The business functions take place out of the client's sight. By nestling the building into a slope, the grade changes allow for public entry on the lower level and staff entry on the upper story.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After two generations of wear and tear on an existing sanctuary, plus growth within the parish, the structure needed more seating capacity and a re-invigorated interior with new liturgical furnishings. The original masonry envelope was uninsulated and poorly lighted plus the building was isolated in a parking lot. The capacity was expanded by 200 seats, and a new plaza and entry with baptistery was introduced to gather the faithful into the completely re-imagined space. The architect designed and commissioned the fabrication of the furnishings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Religious - San Rafael Sanctuary Interior</image:title>
<image:caption>The San Rafael Sanctuary was originally constructed in the 70’s, and over 30 years later, the finishes, lighting, liturgical furnishings, organ, and sound system needed much attention. The challenge on this project, beyond coming up with suitable designs that respected the structure but improved the spiritual environment, was to execute the construction with the least amount of downtime. Working with the selected general contractor, all materials, equipment and furnishings were ordered and stored off-site when possible. When everything was set to go, the work began under a rigorous schedule that refinished the pews, replaced the flooring, re-conditioned and upgraded the organ and the reredos wall, replaced the lighting and repainted the entire interior in a transformation that took less than four weeks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The parish of St. Pius X was established in the 1940’s and has undergone many haphazard additions and remodeling over the decades without the benefit of a carefully designed master plan. in 2007, the parish commissioned Lord Architecture to review all existing functions of the campus. The result was a detailed multi-phase master plan to upgrade and expand the school, remodel and add on to the parish offices, reorganize and re-grade the existing parking throughout the whole campus, and construct a new social hall and sanctuary. To date, Lord Architecture has overseen the design and completion of each phase, with the sanctuary yet to be completed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Religious - San Rafael Office Building</image:title>
<image:caption>Located on a small campus, the parish of San Rafael realized many years ago that the only opportunity for expansion was to purchase a lot within an adjacent business park. In response to an increasing congregation and related parish programs, San Rafael completed a multi-purpose facility on their lot in order to provide new administrative offices, a youth center, and a variety of meeting rooms to satisfy both present and future needs. The planning challenge on this project was the simultaneous obligation to fit with the architectural context of the business park, and at the same time create a strong physical relationship with the remaining parish structures. The relationship was further reinforced by designing a landscaped pathway that dramatically linked the new building to the existing sanctuary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Originally built in 1926, St. Mary's had suffered damage from roof leaks, was dark from poor lighting, and the parishioners were uncomfortable in splintered, worn out pews. At the time of construction, the only baptismal font that the parish had was a portable wooden font that was rolled out when needed. <image:caption>For over 20 years the Parish of St. Luke had hoped to construct a daily mass chapel next to their sanctuary and by doing so, create an appropriate space for their tabernacle that had remained in a storeroom. In another part of the church, a salvaged Italian mosaic was being stored for eventual use as a feature for the chapel entry. At approximately 800 square feet the chapel will comfortably hold 20 people for daily mass or small weddings or a funeral. Mostly, the space is a quiet, devotional, and contemplative light-filled environment that can be entered from outside or from within the existing church.</image:caption>

<image:title>Religious - St. Martha's Sanctuary</image:title>
<image:caption>The Diocese of San Bernardino faced a two-fold challenge. The first is there are fewer priests to lead its parishes and the second is that the region has experienced surprising population growth. The parish of St. Martha is an example of a response to this challenge. The seating capacity of the sanctuary is nearly 1,500 persons to accommodate more parishioners at fewer services. The sanctuary is planned around a seating arrangement that permits the best visual connection to the altar. This arrangement creates an atmosphere that can be more intimate even with a large congregation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Education - Castle Park HS Track & Field</image:title>
<image:caption>Castle Park High School operated for decades with an outdated stadium that was more liability than benefit for the students. The Sweetwater Union High School District embarked on a program to upgrade the stadiums throughout the district. The project site affected over 13 acres of the campus and included parking, a new rubberized 9-lane track around a synthetic turf field marked for multiple sports, and new home and visitor bleachers with a new press box and LED field lighting. The site has significant grade changes that generated multiple ADA access challenges, which were used as a motive to create a dramatic entry to the stadium, well lighted ramps, and a terraced area for picnics and pop-ups during track and field or football events. Concessions and storage buildings were raised up from ordinary to become dynamic site accents that celebrate the energy of the stadium and showcase the school colors in the buildings themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These projects consist of the installation of an addition of approximately 1,225 SF at Orange Glen High School and 1,350 SF at San Pasqual High School, located adjacent to the existing kitchen and matching the existing kitchen in style. The additions include a walk-in freezer and cooler unit along with all the equipment required to support their operation. The additions also include floor sinks, power, lighting, data and fire alarm. The balance of the space will be used for dry storage. This project is currently starting construction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Education - Chula Vista HS Track & Field</image:title>
<image:caption>Chula Vista High School is among the oldest of the campuses in the Sweetwater Union High School District with a sports stadium built originally in the 1950’s; now well past its “use by” date. Replacing the stadium came with significant challenges because the existing campus circulation for students and game day visitors to the facility affected significant parts of the campus which was also laced with aging utilities that needed to be replaced. The stadium design by D.A. Hogan was restricted by several existing site conditions to an 8-lane track instead of the typical 9. Beyond the stadium itself, the project included upgrading parking facilities and the security perimeter, a practice field, ADA access improvements, and construction of five small buildings for ticket booths, storage sports equipment, and two concession buildings for snack sales and public toilets. Each of the buildings was designed for long-lasting durability, necessary for a high school, but with brightly accented exteriors to give an energetic boost that complements the active sports environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Education - Mar Vista HS Track & Field</image:title>
<image:caption>Mar Vista High School, like other high schools in the Sweetwater High School District, was long overdue for a stadium upgrade. Working with the sports facility experts at D.A. Hogan, a new 9-lane track and sports field was designed to replace the existing facilities that were more than three feet higher on one side than the other. The entire site was re-graded and provided with new bleachers on both the home and visitor’s sides, plus an up-to-date press box sports lighting, security fencing, and a new food service and toilet room concession building and sports equipment storage building. The new structures were designed with a flourish to avoid a generic utilitarian appearance and instead bring a little festive energy to the site and show off the school colors. More importantly, the design team had a mandate from the district to replace each of the old utilities that were going to be under any new finished surfaces with new wet and dry utilities.</image:caption>

Our scope of work included the redesign of existing pre-school playground areas to include new fall protection surfacing, DSA pre-checked play systems, and path of travel upgrades to the existing parking lots. Accessible gates and gate hardware were added where needed, and existing wood chip mulch was removed and replaced with new Class II base and poured rubber surface.</image:caption>

<image:title>Education - Lutheran High School</image:title>
<image:caption>Following a long search for a permanent home, Lutheran found a compatible partner and site alongside the Church of Joy in Chula Vista. On a small 8.5 acre campus, the 300 student high school will have space for its classrooms, labs, resource facilities, music rooms, and gymnasiums with an adjacent football field. The multi-phased development plan will start modestly with temporary structures and evolve step-by-step into a fully evolved high school.</image:caption>

<image:title>Education - Mission Middle School - Classroom Building</image:title>
<image:caption>The Escondido Union School District’s Mission Middle school was congested with older relocatable classroom buildings with little space for new classrooms. A plan evolved to move or demolish about 2 dozen relocatable buildings (many used for storage), and reconfigure the site’s running track and play field to make room for a two-story modular building with 21 classrooms and 4 labs to be factory built and assembled on site. The finished building by American Modular, sits on a concrete foundation and completed for a significantly lower cost that conventional construction and on an accelerated schedule. Once the old relocatable buildings were removed, space was freed up to expand much needed parking areas provided with new solar arrays and EV charging. The change to the visual appeal of the campus was transformative which was immediately reflected in the students and staff.</image:caption>
