Castle Park High School operated for decades with an outdated stadium that was more liability than benefit for the students. The Sweetwater Union High School District embarked on a program to upgrade the stadiums throughout the district. The project site affected over 13 acres of the campus and included parking, a new rubberized 9-lane track around a synthetic turf field marked for multiple sports, and new home and visitor bleachers with a new press box and LED field lighting. The site has significant grade changes that generated multiple ADA access challenges, which were used as a motive to create a dramatic entry to the stadium, well lighted ramps, and a terraced area for picnics and pop-ups during track and field or football events. Concessions and storage buildings were raised up from ordinary to become dynamic site accents that celebrate the energy of the stadium and showcase the school colors in the buildings themselves.
