Chula Vista High School is among the oldest of the campuses in the Sweetwater Union High School District with a sports stadium built originally in the 1950’s; now well past its “use by” date. Replacing the stadium came with significant challenges because the existing campus circulation for students and game day visitors to the facility affected significant parts of the campus which was also laced with aging utilities that needed to be replaced. The stadium design by D.A. Hogan was restricted by several existing site conditions to an 8-lane track instead of the typical 9. Beyond the stadium itself, the project included upgrading parking facilities and the security perimeter, a practice field, ADA access improvements, and construction of five small buildings for ticket booths, storage sports equipment, and two concession buildings for snack sales and public toilets. Each of the buildings was designed for long-lasting durability, necessary for a high school, but with brightly accented exteriors to give an energetic boost that complements the active sports environment.
